Masterclass - Fundamentals of Project Management

Presenter: Jeff Kasparian, KasComm
Date: Tuesday 5 September 2023
Time: 9am – 5pm
This Masterclass has been developed to provide participants with an introduction to the fundamentals of project management, and how these are implemented in a research organisation. The program takes an approach of describing project management activities for research management professionals and also provides information specific for the management of research projects and programs.
There are a number of research management roles within organisations who may be required to participate in, or manage projects. Some organisations will have dedicated project management staff, or in some cases a Project Management Office (PMO), however many organisations rely on other staff to design and deliver projects. These projects can range from the implementation of new systems (e.g. grants systems, publications or analytics systems), new processes (e.g. impact reporting, internal grant processes, costing & pricing policies and workflows), or the management of research projects or programs. While many research management professionals  have relevant qualifications specific to their role, it has previously been challenging to find project management training which takes into consideration the specific requirements of the research environment. Over the past few years, the research management profession has been increasingly seeking project management training opportunities which are specific to the sector and this master class is the first step in addressing these training needs.

Masterclass - Costing and Pricing of Research

Presenter: Connie Killey, Deakin University
Date: Tuesday 5 September 2023
Time: 9am – 3pm

An important skillset for any Researcher, Research Administrator, Research Manager, Department Finance Officer or Commercial Manager is to be able to effectively cost and price research projects. With this in mind, the ARMS Costing and Pricing training module has been developed to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of Research Project Costing and Pricing to ultimately ensure there are enough resources for a project to be successfully completed within the project scope and ensure that key Organisational and Investor requirements have been considered.

Workshop - Navigating Agreements: A Guide for Research Management Professionals

Presenter: Karen Burke, Flinders University

Date: Tuesday 5 September 2023

Time slot 1: 9am – 12:30pm
Time slot 2: 1:30pm – 5pm

The Navigating Agreements module is intended to provide the knowledge, skills, and tools necessary to understand the role of, and effectively manage, agreements in research administration across the research project lifecycle. The module aims to provide participants with an understanding of the different types of agreements used in research, the key components of an agreement, and the legal and financial implications of each component.

Participants will learn how to identify potential risks and liabilities associated with agreements and develop strategies to mitigate those risks. They will also gain an understanding of the negotiation process and strategies to ensure favorable terms for their institution. Additionally, the module will cover skills related to agreement drafting and review, compliance and regulatory issues, and monitoring and tracking agreement compliance through to completion.

The module is designed to provide all research management professionals with the tools and knowledge to understand and manage agreements throughout the lifecycle of a research project, from planning and proposals, to project setup, project management and closeout. Participants will be able to see how successful project outcomes can be achieved through good planning and the careful management of the agreement, while delivering value to the researcher and their organisation and protecting them both from potential legal and financial risks.

Workshop - Digital Transformation - Changing Research Culture by Engaging Academic and Professional Colleagues to Design a Digital Platform

Presenters: Deepa Balakrishnan, Alistair Duncan and Amanda Smith, La Trobe University
Date: Tuesday 5 September 2023
Time: 1.30pm – 5pm
Abstract
Successful digital transformations entail cultural change in large research organisations, especially where ways of working are siloed. Engaging researchers and professional staff to involve them on a journey of change can be challenging due to existing time commitments, lack of enthusiasm for technology and limited familiarity with methods for managing major projects. At La Trobe University we set up a successful digital transformation framework for the design, development and implementation of a research management platform. The framework started with culture and was led by business functional teams, not by information technology experts. The successful methodology involved both academic and professional staff leadership heavily involved in the day-to-day design, governance, championing, training and ongoing enhancement of the platform.

This workshop will be invaluable for leaders of research organisations seeking to embark on a research management system implementation or upgrade that will transform existing business processes and integrate existing systems. Critically, it will equip participants to avoid the most common modes of project failure or under-delivery, including a lack of stakeholder accountability due to low perceived ownership of the project.

The workshop will detail this framework, spanning building a coalition to support change, establishing governance, mapping and engaging stakeholders, mobilising expertise and developing change management plans, including an adoption strategy, engagement plan and communication plan. Participants will learn how to create a “one-team” approach and project methodology to support this.
