CONFERENCE THEME:

SHAPING THE NEXT NORMAL: NEW HORIZONS IN RESEARCH MANAGEMENT

Research management is still a relatively new and evolving field; this evolution has been accelerated due to the global impact of COVID-19 on how we live, work and conduct research. This year’s ARMS conference theme embraces this change and fosters discussions about what the future will look like and the changes in practice that are happening or need to happen to effectively support the research endeavour now and in the future. The theme includes four sub-themes that focus on the key aspects of an excellent and impactful research, science and innovation sector: Research Priorities, Research Funding Challenges & Opportunities, Research Workforce, and Research Infrastructure.

This theme includes the following sub-themes:

Each sub-theme for the Virtual Conference represents components of the research and innovation ecosystem that are facilitated and supported by research administrators and managers. These will determine the organisation of abstracts.

SUB THEME 1: RESEARCH PRIORITIES

Increasingly, there is more scrutiny of research, and more focusing of research efforts to address real world problems. This is leading to new ways of working and new research management roles. This sub-theme invites abstracts exploring the nature of research – what research we choose to do (e.g. identifying and supporting priorities), how research is delivered (e.g. through co-design), and how we respond (e.g. the emergence of integrity roles and impact manager roles).

Sub-theme topic examples:

  • Research integrity and ethics and adherence to regulations
  • Research transparency and accountability
  • Codes of conduct and responding to irresponsible research practice, conflicts of interest
  • Power in partnering for advancing global, national, and or local priorities
  • Who’s priorities – agendas, rankings, and metric
  • Transdisciplinary and collaboration between disciplines and other sectors of society to achieve research priorities
  • Research towards the UN sustainable development goals
  • Sustainable priorities for beyond the horizon

SUB THEME 2: RESEARCH FUNDING CHALLENGES & OPPORTUNITIES

Funding research is a challenge faced by most organisations around the world. Australasia needs a diverse and equitable research landscape to tackle our current and future global challenges. These sessions will look at the funding landscape with respect to challenges and opportunities faced by all the different sectors including funders, academics, universities, medical research institutions, public hospitals, and commercial sponsors to take us into the next normal in research and research management. This sub-theme invites abstracts discussing funding challenges and opportunities, particularly ways to respond to mitigate and maximise.

Sub-theme topic examples:

  • New opportunities in research funding
  • Current and emerging challenges in applying for and obtaining research funding
  • Developing funding proposals
  • Managing collaborations and multidisciplinary research

SUB THEME 3: RESEARCH WORKFORCE

We know that the way we conduct research in the future will require a different workforce to what we have now – both researchers in new or different areas and researchers with different skills. This sub-theme invites abstracts addressing the development and support of a research workforce that will meet our future research needs.

Sub-theme topic examples:

  • Developing a research culture
  • Resourcing innovative professional development
  • Supporting early career researchers
  • Best practice in HDR management
  • What does the future look like for a research workforce?

SUB THEME 4: RESEARCH INFRASTRUCTURE

Appropriate investment in, and management of, research infrastructure is needed to facilitate excellent research and fully realise the potential of research collections and data. This sub-theme invites abstracts addressing problems, opportunities and changing needs related to research infrastructure, such as laboratories, equipment, collections and databases.

Sub-theme topic examples:

  • Funding, governance and ownership arrangements for national research infrastructures
  • Maximising the value from investment in research infrastructure
  • Data infrastructure and associated issues e.g. democratisation and sovereignty
  • Sustainability of existing and future research infrastructure
  • Future state for research infrastructure
  • Physical infrastructure
  • Collaborative infrastructure
  • Incorporating Indigenous needs and values into appropriate management of research infrastructure
